Fitness percentiles by age
Agegrouper compares your fitness with published reference data for people of your exact age and sex. You see your percentile in six dimensions, and how it moves as you train and as you age.

Each dimension combines one or two measures that research links to health and performance. A percentile of 70 means you score better than 70 out of 100 people of your age and sex.
VO₂max and resting heart rate.
FRIEND registry · NHANESGrip strength and push-ups to fatigue.
Dodds et al. 2014 · CSEPBody fat percentage.
Cooper Institute · ACSMSit-and-reach and standing on one leg with eyes closed.
CSEP · Springer et al. 2007Daily steps, averaged over 30 days.
Tudor-Locke et al. 2009Overnight heart rate variability (RMSSD).
Natarajan et al. 2020Import your Garmin Connect data export or a CSV, and add simple tests such as grip strength or push-ups by hand. Each test comes with instructions.
Reference tables usually come in ten-year brackets. Agegrouper interpolates between them, so a 44-year-old is compared with 44-year-olds, not with everyone from 40 to 49.
Monthly charts show your percentile over time and your raw values against your age group's percentile bands.
Reference values come from peer-reviewed studies and national health surveys, including the FRIEND cardiopulmonary exercise registry, the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the Cooper Institute norms. Every source is cited in the app.
Agegrouper is for orientation and motivation. It is not a medical device and does not give medical advice.
We are starting with a small, free pilot group of 10 to 20 people. If you train with a Garmin device and want to take part, write to us.
